Chapter Seven
The hospital room was as sterile as any hospital room, and Buffy hated it on sight. She pretty much hated all hospital rooms. They were meant to cure illnesses and ease suffering, but mostly, they seemed to be where people came to die. Oh, she knew it was irrational and she did her best not to think about it too much, but there it was. Sadly, she knew a lot of the people standing around Giles’s bed felt the same way.
And there were a lot of people in the small room. Aside from herself and Giles, there was Willow, Faith, and, of course, Ethan Rayne. She might have felt a little uncomfortable, but Ethan was positively squirming. That was a big plus in Buffy ‘s book. Okay, that he was squirming because she had her hand around his throat and had him pinned to the wall like a butterfly in a display case . . . well, that was just dreamy.
Right at the moment, he was turning the most delightful shade of purple red, almost like the color of a really ripe plum. Normally, Giles would have been cautioning her to calm down about now, and she would have been listening. Giles felt that too much gratuitous beating on a baddy was a bad thing. Of course, where Ethan Rayne was concerned, that particular rule didn’t apply. Right at the moment, Giles wasn’t feeling too much of anything. He was asleep and doped to the gills with enough happy medications to stop his battered body and recently sewn up leg from hurting too much.
Just before she would have let him go anyway, Spike and Xander stepped into the room.
Xander took one look at the scene and moved over, placing a hand on Buffy’s arm. “Whoa, camel. Hang on. Anya’s home asleep, but I stopped to get Spike like you asked, just in case Kakistos attacks the hospital. But you promised not to beat Ethan to a pulp until I got here.”
Spike shook his head and mumbled. “A bloke can’t get a decent hour’s kip around here.”
Buffy looked over her shoulder at Xander and smiled. Ethan stayed where he was, but she eased up enough to let him get a little air. “Right. And now you’re here. Let the beating commence.”
Xander nodded and looked past Buffy to see Willow. “How’s Tara?”
Willow, looking a little like a witch who’d been in some serious fisticuffs with little demons and was now in need of a few weeks’ sleep, smiled faintly. “Upstairs, resting. They don’t think it’s serious, but they want to X-ray her shoulder.”
Buffy hauled Ethan away from the wall and then slammed him back into it. “Talk to me, sconehead.”
Ethan smiled a nervously smarmy smile. “Happily, darling.” Buffy set him down and he did his best to look cool about the rather unfortunate turn of events. “During my captivity, I prayed often to the lords of chaos I had worshipped for so many years. But my pleas for aid fell upon deaf ears.
